About SPHERE Research

SPHERE (Southwest Pre-Hospital Emergency Research and Evaluation) is a collaborative network of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), ambulance services, academic institutions, and healthcare partners across Southwest England.

Our aim is to improve patient care by developing and delivering high-quality research in prehospital and critical care medicine. By bringing together clinicians, researchers, and organisations from across the region, we create opportunities for collaboration, reduce duplication of effort, and support innovation in areas that matter most to patients and frontline teams.

Drawing on the Southwest’s unique urban, rural, and coastal environments, SPHERE generates evidence that informs practice locally while contributing to national and international knowledge. We are committed to supporting new researchers, fostering partnerships, and building a sustainable research culture that advances prehospital critical care through meaningful, real-world research.
